Postcard beaches reachable only by boat, a waterfall hidden in the jungle, the mangroves of Los Haitises and, in winter, the dance of the humpback whales: the Samaná peninsula is the wildest side of the Dominican Republic. On this 10-day Samaná tour, you explore from Las Terrenas, alternating guided excursions and free days to experience the peninsula at your own pace.
Who: Couples, families and friends
Transport: Private driver, local guide for the excursions
Accommodation: Charming boutique hotel in Las Terrenas
Welcome to the Samaná peninsula! When you land at El Catey airport, your driver meets you and takes you to Las Terrenas, a former fishing village that has become the liveliest spot on the peninsula.
You settle into a small, charming boutique hotel just steps from the beach. The rest of the day is yours.
Our favorite places for dinner are waiting for you in your travel guide.
A day with no plans, to recover from the journey and find your bearings. A breakfast with no alarm clock, a first swim in 28 °C water, a walk along the sand of Playa Popy or Las Ballenas: let yourself slip into the peninsula’s easy-going pace.
In the evening, sit facing the ocean and watch the sunset.
Head to Las Galeras, at the tip of the peninsula, with your driver and guide. From there, a boat takes you to three of the most beautiful beaches on the island, mostly reachable by sea: Playa Frontón and its coral reefs, the vast palm-fringed Playa Rincón, and the small Playita.
On the program: swimming, snorkeling and a lunch of freshly caught fish with your feet in the sand. Back to Las Terrenas in the late afternoon.
If you are traveling between mid-January and the end of March, this day will probably be the highlight of your trip. From the port of Santa Bárbara de Samaná, you board a small boat with a specialist guide to watch the humpback whales that come to breed in the bay. Breaches, blows, tail flukes: an unforgettable show, enjoyed while respecting the approach rules.
Outside the whale season, enjoy a free day or, as an option, a horseback ride on the beach at sunset.
Head to Sánchez with your driver and guide. A boat takes you across Samaná Bay to Los Haitises National Park, a world apart of mangroves, limestone hills covered in vegetation and caves decorated with Taíno petroglyphs. Keep your eyes open: pelicans, frigatebirds and herons nest here by the hundreds.
Lunch in a local restaurant, then back to your hotel around 3 pm.
Another day at your own pace. For those who want to take home a true Dominican souvenir, we offer an optional merengue and bachata class with a dance teacher: enough to shine on the dance floor that very evening!
Breakfast at the hotel, then free afternoon and evening.
An early start with your driver to avoid the heat and the crowds. A walk through the tropical forest, among cocoa trees, palms and rivers, leads you to El Limón, a waterfall over 40 meters high that plunges into a natural pool. Nothing beats a swim at the foot of the falls to cool off.
Traditional lunch at a nearby ranch, then back to the hotel for a relaxing afternoon.
For your last day, we offer an optional half-day quad tour with a guide, starting from the village of El Limón. Red dirt tracks lead you to small farmers who introduce you to coffee and cocoa growing, before a well-deserved swim at Playa Morón, at the foot of its cliffs.
Breakfast at the hotel and the rest of the day free for last-minute shopping or one last swim.
